Cleveland looks super in just-released “Superman” trailer

The world got its first glimpse of the new Superman movie – and, yes, Cleveland. On Thursday, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for the film, most of which was shot in Cleveland and the area over the summer.

Look for these Cleveland locations:

Public Square, which was transformed with Metropolis banners, newspaper boxes, park benches and bus stops. Adorned busses were used to transform the RTA into the Metropolis Transit Authority;

  • The Leader Building, which stands in for the Daily Planet;

  • The storefronts near the Old Stone Church were made to look like retro a book store, appliance dealer and pet shop;

  • Cleveland City Hall, made to look like the government seat of Metropolis;

  • Detroit-Superior Bridge, Progressive Field and the Arcade, all featured prominently.

“Superman” is the third major film to feature Public Square. It was also used in the holiday classic “A Christmas Story” (1983) and was a stand in for Stuttgart in “The Avengers” (2012).

Scheduled for release July 11, 2025, the film is the first entry in the DC Universe’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” The DCU is the shared universe in which most stories take place, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Suicide Squad, Justice League and Aquaman.

Filming in Cleveland and surrounding areas like Mentor, and Cincinnati is estimated to have brought 1,200 jobs to area and more than 3,400 jobs statewide.

Superman, the world’s first comic book superhero, was invented in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Boutique Fidelity Hotel opening to bring new life to storied area

Cleveland’s downtown legends were born around Short Vincent. For much of the 20th century, the 485-foot strip of bars, restaurants and clubs running between East Sixth and East Ninth Street was the epicenter of city nightlife. It all disappeared by the ‘80s and Short Vincent became a dead zone.

Come January, the Fidelity Hotel is hoping to bring new life and legends to the area. The 97-room boutique hotel – 1940 East Sixth Street -- will open its doors, rooms and bar in January. The Fidelity has already started accepting reservations beginning with Jan. 28. (Rooms run $161-$282.)

The Club Room restaurant and bar looks like a classic spot from the 1950s, with its sophisticated hues and layout and mid-century modern design. The look and vibe match the color scheme, design and woodwork of the rooms.

The Fidelity is the first hotel to be built from scratch in downtown since the Hilton Cleveland Downtown Hotel, which opened in 2016, before the Republican National Convention.

The three-year project disrupted traffic along East Sixth and led to the closing of Dave’s Cosmic Subs, Souper Market and Moriarty’s Pub. They were located on the ground level of the Baker Building, originally known as the Fidelity Mortgage Building -- from which the hotel takes its name.

Survey says: What do you think about Hopkins Airport?

Photo courtesy Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

 It’s been year of transition and a bumpy ride for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The airport is on track to have 10.2 million passengers in 2024, the most since 2008. But it also experienced a 7.3 percent decline in October -- due in part to the ending of flights by bankrupt Spirit Airlines.

Hopkins received more bad news when a JD Power survey ranked it 15th out of 15 medium-sized airports (that included Columbus, Buffalo and Pittsburgh). Then some good news: Aer Lingus would extend direct flights to Dublin until 2027.

The City of Cleveland is banking on a $3 billion renovation that will improve the customer experience and expand routes. And it wants your input. Hopkins has released a survey to find out what the public thinks about the airport and Cleveland and will use those responses to help shape the new design of airport.

The renovation is set to begin late-’25 or early-’26. The first phase is set to cost $1 billion and will involve an expansion of the terminal. To take the survey, go here.

The 216 Digest

It’s a holiday homecoming for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

The Cleveland hip-hop legends who grew up on East 99th Street and St. Clair Avenue stuck out from the ‘90s East and West Coast crowds by mixing singing with raps, harmonies with a fast cadence. They blew away Eazy-E, who signed them to Ruthless Records. They also inspired the area on a deeper level because they made it out of Cleveland, but always stayed close to home. At 7 p.m. Friday, they hit House of Blues, 308 Euclid Avenue. For tickets, go here.

LOL: Mike Polk Jr. brings his Holiday Show to Hilarities

Cleveland’s favorite comedian is back for his annual romp. Yeah, Polk – the guy whose viral CLE tourist video parodies, Tim Misny  jokes and sports comedy made him a local darling. At 9:15 p.m. Saturday, the Mike Polk Jr. Holiday Show hits the Frolic Cabaret, 2035 East Fourth Street, Cleveland.

Cleveland Bazaar is back for one more shopping spree

Last weekend’s Cleveland Bazaar’s 20th anniversary Holiday Market packed the floors, galleries and shops at 78th Street Studios last weekend. So Cleveland Bazaar is returning for an impromptu encore. The Last Minute Market at 78th Street, 1300 78th Street, Cleveland, runs 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It will take place on the lower ramp level.

It’s a rock ‘n’ roll flea at the Beachland

The flea market with the rock ‘n’ roll  theme is back at the Beachland Ballroom, 15711 Waterloo Road, Cleveland. Beachland Holiday Flea rolls out more than 30 vendors selling a wide of range vinyl and other music-related items, along with collectibles, clothes and crafts – with food and drinks to boot. It runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
